So long summer

We might still be getting the odd streak of sunshine, but with the nights starting to draw in it’s time to look back on what’s been a wonderful and exciting season for Boilerhouse and gather ourselves ready for the descent into autumn with its pretty colours in both hair and nature.

If you’ve not yet signed up to our newsletter you can do so here. Our monthly mailshot keeps you well abreast of all recent goings on as well as our ever changing offers. This blog will fill in your summer gaps if you’ve not had chance to catch up with the salon or your stylist recently.

You may have noticed a few new faces crop up recently – we’ve been recruiting lots of new and enthusiastic apprentices to grow our ever expanding and talented team. First came Isaac and Natalie at the beginning of summer and, more recently, Chloe and Becca. With so many new apprentices, as of Monday 19th September we’ll be introducing ‘Model Mondays’ as part of the Boilerhouse training academy, delivered and overseen by salon director Kim and niece Saskia. Moving training to a Monday allows us to dedicate more time and attention to our largest young team yet, with the session running from 10am to 6pm with a variety of slots available for cuts and colours. We’re also on the lookout for blowdry and hair up styling models so if you’ve a spare few hours one Monday we’d love to welcome you in the salon for a complimentary styling session!

We also welcome (back) a new face to some, though familiar to many others. Sally first joined Boilerhouse in 1986 where she did her training with Kim. She’s a big believer in treatments and is a top stylist with a real passion for creative technical colours. Although she’s been gone some time, we’re thrilled she plans to finish her hairdressing career with us, back where it all began for her.

This year seems to have been a real summer of love for the salon with not one, but two weddings! Leanne and partner Mark tied the knot back in June in the beautiful recently opened Otterburn venue Le Petit Chateau, while Zahra and partner Max opted for a further flung wedding, exchanging vows on a sunny beach in Nerja, Spain. We wish both couples every happiness 🙂

Balayage seems to show no signs of slowing as the in thing when it comes to colouring techniques. The summer season saw a demand for all aspects of balayge and ombré from subtle and sunkissed to bright and beachy. This, often freehand, technique offers personalised colour which can be much easier to maintain than regular highlights. Our top tips for beautiful balayage? 1) Be realistic – depending on your base colour, it may take more than one appointment to build and blend your chosen look. 2) Remember condition – the ends of your hair are the oldest and most fragile points of your hair, so if they’re going to wind up the lightest point, you’ll need good products and regular treatments to keep them healthy. 3) Have a consultation – if in any doubt of what you want, always pop in for a chat with us prior to your appointment. This allows us to dedicate the right amount of time to you for your appointment and, if you’re having your roots darkened, ensure you’ve had a skin test so it’s all systems go when you do come in for your appointment.

We’re always thinking of ways to reward your loyalty for which we’re so grateful. As well as our product loyalty system which is detailed in some of our previous blogs, we also reward online reviews you leave by giving you a free conditioning treatment the next time you visit to thank you for your time. This month we launched a monthly rolling competition where you can win a free cut and blowdry by sharing and hash tagging pictures of your hair and beauty  with #boilerhousehair (selfies and group shots both welcome!).

Last but not least, you’ll likely recall that this time last year we were celebrating the salon’s 30th anniversary with a staff party at Lane7 that went down a storm. This time we swapped bowling balls and karaoke microphones for shakers and jiggers with a private cocktail making class at Tokyo bar in the city. We’re not sure we’ll be making you Singapore Slings or Zombies any time soon, though a great time was had by all, and raising our handmade cocktails was a great way to mark Boilerhouse coming into its 31st year in business.
