9 (Simple) Ways to Protect Your Hair While Sleeping

Here at Boilerhouse, we are experts on all things hair and one thing we always get asked about is how to protect your hair when sleeping?! We all know there isn’t anything worse than having to lay your head on the pillow after a killer blowdry! Going to the land of sleep and catching some well deserved Z’s is one of life’s best activities, however, aside from leaving you looking like you have been dragged through a hedge backwards, sleeping can also be damaging to your hair! Seemingly harmless habits like snoozing with wet hair, using cotton pillowcases, and over-brushing, can cause tangles, breakage, and even mould (ew).

However, do not fret as the expert team at Boilerhouse have your back! Unsure you no longer leave yourself susceptible to unnecessary breakage with these top tips to protect your hair when sleeping…

Splurge on a silk pillowcase

Thinking of investing in a silk pillowcase? Well, although making the trade up from cotton pillowcases to high-quality silk ones is a bit of an investment, your hair will thank you. Silk is a gentler fabric compared to cotton. The smaller fibres of silk pillows prevent your ends from excessive damage and pulling, especially if you toss and turn overnight.

Dry your hair before bed

Your hair is its weakest when it’s wet, so by sleeping on wet hair, it makes it even more susceptible to breakage. Make sure your hair is dry before you fall asleep.

Brush your hair before bed

You’ve heard the old myth about brushing your hair 100 times before bed right? Okay, 100 times might be exaggerating. However, there is some truth in ensuring your hair is tangle-free before bed.

Don’t sleep with your hair tied up!

Sleeping with your hair up in a messy bun or high ponytail may seem harmless, but the tension from having your hair up for several hours can put a strain on your scalp and lead to eventual hair damage. Instead, sleep with it down, or if you have to tie it back, go low with a ponytail or loose braid at the nape of your neck. Try pulling your hair up with a soft scrunchie instead!

Scrunchies over bobbles

If you are going to sleep with your hair up, make sure to use a scrunchie. It’s not as tight as a bobble, so it won’t cause damage to your hair!

Apply some dry shampoo

Your hair is at its more vulnerable when wet and over-shampooing can strip your hair of all its natural oils – which can lead it to break. Adding a little dry shampoo at night can help as it will absorb the natural oils and sweat while you sleep. This means you don’t have to wash your hair as much!

Use a silk scarf

If you want your hair off your face, you can wrap it in a silk scarf. It’s like sleeping on a silk pillowcase, but it will keep your hair back without having to tie it up in an elastic.
Take your beauty sleep to the next level by sleeping with a chic satin headscarf. Just like the silk pillowcase, the scarf will help protect your ends and maintain your hairstyle. That’s right! Whether it’s on day one or day two hair, wearing a satin scarf while you sleep will help preserve those precious curls or braids, and prevent that inevitable “just woke up” frizz. A silky bonnet or turban will work just as well.

Apply an overnight treatment

Apply an oil treatment to the ends of your hair to help condition and hydrate while you sleep. Though since your hair is weak when it’s wet, apply it to dry hair, then wash and go in the morning.
