30 Jan 5 Ways To Keep Your Curls Overnight
There is no one way to sleep with curly hair. It’s all about finding what’s best for your hair, so you’re not waking up with frizzy, messy or flat curls. Everyone needs a good night’s sleep, just make sure your hair is ready for bed too! Whether you’re blessed with natural curls, or you owe it all to your magic wand, here are our top 5 ways to keep your curls overnight…
Get fruity with it
Try the “pineapple” – and no, we don’t mean the fruit. One of the best ways to preserve your luscious curls overnight is to put your hair into what is known as the “pineapple”. Simply tie up your curls into a loose ponytail to the top of your head and you’re good to go! This idea behind this is that your hair will come into less contact with your pillow, preventing unnecessary friction and maintain your curls.
Pro Tip: If your hair is incredibly thick or long, you may want to split your ponytail into two separate pieces.
Braid it up
Loose braid, mini braids or French braid? It’s worth experimenting with several different braids while you sleep. Tight mini braids will leave your hair with more of a crimp. Whereas a single loose braid will help maintain more of a natural curl. Thinking of a French braid? This is a great way to give your hair more volume and maintain your waves!
Sleeping with a loose bun will not only stop your hair from brushing up against your face all night, but it will also help to maintain your curls for longer (plus add a little volume!)
Pro Tip: Put your hair in a scrunchie to secure your bun. This will avoid putting a dent in your hair – which can happen when using a hair tie.
Silk is your new best friend
Sleeping on a silk pillowcase can do wonders for your hair. They will keep your hair hydrated and minimise frizz and breakage when compared to a cotton pillowcase. Are you vegan? Go for a satin or bamboo pillowcase instead!
Get bonny in your bonnet
Don’t have a silk pillow? It’s time to get bonny! Simply place your curls inside of your favourite hair bonnet and watch as you wake up to your perfectly preserved curls. The best thing about wearing a bonnet is that it keeps your hair in one place and prevents friction.
Pro Tip: Combine the “pineapple” with your favourite bonnet for that extra layer of protection.
Give your hair the plop
This method involves thoroughly hydrating your hair with moisturizer and styler and wrapping it in a t-shirt or towel. You can leave the “plop” in for 10 to 20 minutes or overnight. It’s entirely up to you! Click here to read a guide on how to perform this method.
Make it a steamy one
Do you usually take a shower in the morning? This is a great opportunity to put the bounce back in your curls. Give your hair a good shake and without washing it or getting it wet, take a hot steamy shower. The steam from the shower will infuse moisture into your hair and allow your hair to clump throughout and enhance your luscious curls.
You gotta oil it up
Curly hair tends to hold less moisture than straight hair. Oils from your scalp will naturally flow down your hair if it’s straight. Yet, with curly hair, the lack of hydration from natural oils can lead to brittle and frizzy hair. To help prevent this, before you start to create your curls, we recommend that you make sure to apply a great hair oil while it’s still wet. This will help to lock in moisture and keep your curls looking thick and radiant.
